FootMotion X Ironman 70.3

FootMotion Kris Smith - IRONMAN 70.3
Our FootMotion Bundaberg team member, Kris Smith, recently competed in the Sunshine Coast Ironman 70.3, showcasing his incredible endurance and determination. Taking on the challenging 1.9km swim, 90km bike ride, and 21.1km run, Kris pushed himself to the limit, embodying the same commitment to performance that he brings to our team. We’re proud of Kris's amazing achievement and his dedication both on and off the race course!
Kris finished with an impressive time of 4 hours and 39 minutes. Competing against 139 athletes in his age group, Kris placed 23rd overall and achieved remarkable split times – ranking in the top 17 for the bike leg and top 30 for the run. His dedication and athleticism are a true reflection of the drive we celebrate at FootMotion!
And here's the shoes that helped him get there:

We asked Kris some post race questions and here is what he had to say:

  • How did your shoes hold up during the race? Did they meet your expectations in terms of comfort and performance?

    • Shoes really preformed as expected. The responsiveness of the plate in combination of the cushioning really helped when the legs where fatigued.
  • How did your nutrition strategy affect your energy levels during the event?

    • During the event, my nutrition was spot on as planned. Most of the nutrition was taken on board during the bike. This helped me not have any gut issues as previously experienced during my IM Cairns Race.
  • Based on this race, is there anything you'd like to improve or change in your training regimen?
    • As with any race, there is much to learn and build upon. Between my coach and I, we continue to explore weaknesses in my races. Right now, it will be on ability to hold a strong pace on the bike and still have strong legs running off. I tend to push harder then planned and therefore suffer more then necessary on the run leg. It is a endurance event that covers 3 areas. I have to control myself a bit and not get caught up in the racing.
  • Were there any moments where you felt your footwear gave you an edge or hindered your performance?

    • Yes, while the Mizuno Wave Rebellion Pro 2 performed exceptionally well in most conditions, I did notice that during the sharp hairpin turns, I had to adjust my approach slightly. To ensure stability and avoid any potential strain, I slowed down and took shorter steps through the U-turns. Overall, the shoes offered great responsiveness and speed, but like any race gear, it's important to understand how they handle in specific situations.
  • Is there any footwear or gear you wish you had during the race that could improve your performance next time?

    • I would definitely wear socks next time. Trialing no socks was not a mistake on race day but I did suffer many big blisters as a result. No regrets on the day tho. Also with new technology, comes small advantages. A cooling head band would help keep cool for the run leg.

Congratulations Kris what an achievement!
